Best purchase this year: Fujitsu Scan Snap S300M

Fujitsu Scan Snap S300MI’m the type of girl that gets a zillion magazines, rips out the stuff that looks cool (recipes, organizing ideas, crafts, whatever) and puts them away in a folder… never to be touched again. Now, I have a ton of cool articles and how-to’s, but how would I ever find them if they’re in piles, tucked away somewhere I never see?

January we went to Macworld in San Francisco. There was a lot of cool stuff, but the one thing that stuck out was this scanner, the Fujitsu Scan Snap S300M (different versions for Mac and PC). It is so awesome! Originally we wanted to get it to scan all our receipts and become paperless, but I have scanned all of my magazine articles (143 so far)! The tiny scanner has a feeder and can be set up to do whatever you want, whether it is saving the stack in the feeder to one PDF, or save each page to it’s own file, scanning both sides, or one, color or black and white, etc etc…

Being the dork that I am, I built an app to upload all of them, tag them, sort them, put prices on them (for receipts) and best of all, search through them!

The only complaint I have about the scanner is one part of the software. You have three options to save your files - two of them are date formats, and the last is “custom”, but in this “custom” format, you can’t include the current date! Totally dumb, but in the big picture, it doesn’t even matter.

what software does it include? you said you wrote your own program, does it not have one for sorting receipts?

Sara:
I’m pretty sure the mac version only comes with business cardiris business card software and the software used to scan. I think the pc version comes with more software. I ended up buying Yep! (http://www.yepthat.com/yep/index.html) to organize and tag all of my PDF’s. The scanner doesn’t automatically OCR (although the pc version says it does) but next on the list is to make some kind of batch process for when documents are scanned!
